Partnering with Parents
The first legal contract an 18 year old enters is likely to be their housing agreement. It surprises many parents and guardians when they realize their son or daughter is bound by the financial terms and conditions of the Housing Application/Agreement form.
"But they don't have any money! We will be paying the bill." is an expression we often hear parents express. While many ODU students are fortunate to have parental support, it is the student that receives the services and is expected to manage the business of on-campus living.
At ODU, we don't keep parents at bay. Instead we want parents to partner with us as they try to support their son or daughter's growing independence. It is important for parents to anticipate the student experience and understand how the University interacts with students and parents and recognize the best way for them to engage in the life of the university and their student's experience.
