Policies & Guidelines

Students residing in campus housing must abide by the rules and regulations set forth by the Office of Student Housing and the student code of conduct as listed in the Student Handbook.

Suggested Items

When planning what to bring, please keep in mind the size of your room. You should also check with your roommate to see what he/she is bringing so that you do not duplicate items. The following is a list of items that many residents consider essentials for your stay on campus.

  • Extra-long twin sheet set

  • Bedspread or comforter

  • Pillow

  • Alarm clock

  • Hangers

  • Toilet tissue, plastic soap dish, shower sandals

  • Receipts and literature from Old Dominion University

  • First aid items

  • Hygiene items

  • Names, addresses, phone numbers and policy numbers of medical, homeowner and automobile insurance companies

  • Cleaning supplies

  • Can/bottle opener

  • Iron/ironing board

  • Plates, bowls, cups

  • Radio/stereo (headphones recommended)

  • Refrigerator (no larger than 4.0 cubic feet)

  • Microwaves (allowed in the apartments and Quad only!)

  • Eating utensils

  • Touch tone telephone

  • Desk/reading lamp

  • Computer

  • Printer

  • 15 amp surge protector with a circuit breaker

Prohibited Items

If prohibited items are observed in a room, the items will be confiscated and disciplinary action may be initiated.

Decals, Metal Signs and Stickers 
Because of damage to painted walls, windows and other surfaces.

Pets (with the exception of fish)
They constitute a serious disturbance to health and sanitary conditions.

Electrical Appliances with Exposed Heating Elements
If it GLOWS it GOES.  Serious fire hazards and sanitation problems; this includes such items as hot plates, ovens, toasters, grills, strings of lights, toaster ovens and soldering irons.

Microwaves (except in the Apartments and the Quad)

Darts, Dart Boards and Liquid-Filled Furniture
They cause potential damage to the floor, walls, and furnishings.

Candles 
Burning candles and incense constitute a fire hazard.

Halogen Lamps
They constitute a fire hazard.

Extension Cords
They constitute a fire hazard.

Firearms, Fireworks, and Dangerous Weapons
They are a potential danger to other residents. This includes but is not limited to, pistols, ROTC firearms, rifles, BB guns, water guns, hand billies, nonchucks, switchblades, explosives, and dangerous chemicals.

Lofts and Platforms
Because of fire hazard and damage to the rooms.

Major Appliances (such as washers, dryers, dishwashers)
Because of electrical and plumbing problems.  Microwave ovens are only permitted in Powhatan Village.

Aerials, Masts, and Other Shortwave Radio Transmitting Equipment
They violate FCC interference regulations and safety precautions.

The following are also in violation of Housing Services policy:

  • Removal of window security clips
  • Excessively dirty and unclean living conditions
  • Painting any surface without written permission from Housing Services
  • Removing any section of furniture or stacking furniture
  • Use of tape on dry walls (use thumbtacks or straight pins)
  • Use of nails or tacks on brick or cinder block walls (use tape)
  • Items may not be hung from or attached to ceilings or doors
  • Furniture may not be removed from your apartment/room
  • Fire extinguishers may not be discharged unless there is a fire - you must report it if you use your fire extinguisher (to the Assistant Area Coordinator)
  • Flammable substances
  • Fire hazards: live Christmas trees and using multi-outlet plugs
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Motorcycles, motor scooters and other internal combustion engines inside or adjacent to buildings
  • Bicycles may not be kept in stairwells, hallways, or attached to anything other than bike racks
  • Writing on painted surfaces or University property
  • Damages to University property
